The worst of the crop of bad gifts for dad I’ve seen is the tooth-whitening kit on the Father’s Day stand in Boots. “Hey dad, I thought your teeth were looking a bit yellow.” This beats the ad running on daytime TV: “Do you think your father’s s memory is failing. Buy him Professor Kawashima’s Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain?” Dad would be delighted.

Most adverts, such as the 1977 Spirit of Punk Compilation ad, are content with simply slapping a disjointed voice on the end that says “buy one for dad”. The 77 Spirit of Punk collection “dad” tag really gets me down. I loved punk and have a serious collection of singles from 1976, when it started. In 77, you would never find anyone who claimed to like punk. Everyone liked the Bee Gees in 77. Now of course, they all say they loved it. Did they? I don’t think so. Anyway, here’s the track list. There’s no Patrik Fitzgerald, Safety Pin Stuck in My Heart. You see, that’s how selective memory is.
