Bad news from the Transmission blog. McSweeney’s got burned by their distributor. The $130000 must have been tied up in some arcane agreement beloved of the old world of publishing. They should never have moved into the old world so quickly. There’s nothing wrong with making a buck, but those old established publishing people have been at it for centuries, and their days are over. I first came to McS online, and loved their online presence. McSweeney’s was an original and tangential magazine, but they rejected everything I sent them, things that have been accepted elsewhere. They moved steadily safer and more mainstream. I’m hoping some good will come of this. McS will rise from the ashes in a new form not quite so dependant on the old world.
